Wikipedia celebrates ten years online
The free encyclopedia that anyone can edit Wikipedia has celebrated ten years since its launch on January 15, 2001. To mark the occasion, a subdomain website Wikipedia 10 has been created to host 472 events trough the world.
Jimmy Wales thanks the 400 million unique visitors connected each month to the website hosting 17 millions of articles in 257 active language versions. He told BBC News the site needed to improve its interface to attract a new generation of contributors, including more women and older people.
The english version of Wikipedia contains over three and a half million content pages, with more than 22 million pages on the wiki and in excess of 438 million total edits being performed since its founding. On it, there are approximately 13.7 million registered users; roughly 125,000 of them have performed an action on the site within the last thirty days.
At present, Wikipedia has an Alexa Traffic Rank of eight and is given funding by members of the public who donate to it.
